The First Dot is the Hardest

March 26, 2025

Ever stared at a blank page, an empty screen, or a big idea that feels too overwhelming to start?

I have had days and days as an author where I’ve taken a day off paid work to write and the words just don’t come. Or days where I’ve been filming for courses or ads and no matter what I do, it just doesn’t flow.

The pressure to get it just right can be paralyzing.

But here’s the thing: creativity, confidence, and clarity don’t come from thinking about it. They come from doing. When filming goes astray sometimes I just keep rolling and keep talking about something, anything until I get my flow back.

A few weeks ago I took my kids to the NGV in Melbourne to see Yayoi Kusama’s Obliteration Room—  it’s a white room filled with everyday furniture. A stark white space that transforms into a world of colour as visitors place coloured sticker dots, one by one around the room. Stickers on the floor, on the TV, on the piano – my youngest had a ball!

The magic isn’t in a single dot. It’s in the act of just starting.

The same goes for sharing your message, building your presence, or stepping into the next version of yourself. You don’t have to see the whole masterpiece yet—you just have to place the first dot.

I now cannot think of sticky dots or pumpkins without thinking of Kusama. And yet, I’d never heard of Yayoi Kusama’s work until early this year.  I watched my friend and coaching client Lisa Ransome complete a complex jigsaw puzzle of Kusama’s pumpkin over on IG. I had no idea that the artist is now the highest paid female modern artist, that she’s in her 90s and that she’s lived in institutionalised care (what many people call a “mental asylum”) since the 1970s.

You know by now how passionate I am about helping women move forward with their dream for global impact. For many, many women I coach it’s about taking imperfect action to clear self-doubt.

So here’s my question for you:

What’s one small action you can take today to move forward?

What will get you closer to the first podcast episode being recorded, your book chapter outline done, or being able to hit ‘publish’ on that post? Is it that you need structure, accountability or something deeper like clearing the blocks from old stories in your past? I use a range of EMDR, hypnosis and EFT to help my coaching clients clear blocks. I’m also good with adding structure to the scatter 🤣
