Where Woo meets Science

February 19, 2025

I grew up in a house where there were lots of books, but not much in the category of spiritual, self-development or ‘woo’.

Somewhere along the line, a friend or work colleague must have loaned or gifted my mother a copy of Wayne Dyer’s 1989 book ‘you’ll see it when you believe it’. This must have been the first self-help book I encountered.

A few years later, the book Creative Visualisation by Shakti Gawain literally fell off the shelf in front of me at a crystal shop in Launceston and I decided to buy it. I practised the techniques and low and behold I could ‘see’ my future boyfriend’s (now husband) face and name.

Was it life changing and miraculous? Yes.

Did I continue to keep practising? No! It scared the living crap out of me and I stopped meditating for about 20 years. That, and my training as a Psychologist flattened out a lot of the fun and joy in anything to do with spirituality or self-development.

Why am I telling you this? Because even if you are the least ‘woo’ person on the planet, I can draw you to the power of your imagination, selective attention and the reticular activating system (RAS)

You can only pay attention to a certain amount of things and what you focus on tends to shape the focus of your life. If you decide you want to get pregnant – suddenly it will seem as if all the women you know are getting pregnant. If you want to buy a new car, suddenly you’ll notice that there’s red cars everywhere. If I tell you to focus on a basketball game, and count how many times people in white pass the ball, you’ll miss the gorilla

Your focus is on what you SEE – whether it’s true or not

The same principle applies to our goals and dreams. When you decide to pay particular notice to the change you want to see in the world and the impact you want to make, you’ll start to believe it’s possible.

Resources, opportunities and support will be there to guide you in your goal

Give your brain permission to focus on what you want this year!

When I think about my favourite work of the last 20 years, whether it’s research, therapy, coaching or hypnobirthing – they all have something in common. working with the concept that your brain doesn’t know the difference between something ‘real’ and something imagined. Imagery rehearsal is such an important part of the work I’ve always done with clients. Clearing out the unwanted or scary patterns of response that can feel trapped in time and replacing them with a new routine, way of behaving and a belief system.

So effective, but with most of this work, the tools are things you can learn anywhere. It’s the relationship – the connection, trust and clarity that you get from working with the person who is right for you; that’s where the magic happens.

It really can take time to find the right business support. Much like finding a GP or a Therapist! You can always book a free coaching call with me here.
