Growing a Podcast with Johanna Badenhorst

Johanna Badenhorst adhd her way

September 1, 2025

Podcasting can be a wild ride! I’ve run 3 of my own now. Each time it is a beautiful dance between imperfection and passion. And it’s not just about hitting record and hoping for the best. It’s about finding your voice in a world that often tells you to stay quiet. Nobody understands this better than Johanna Badenhorst.

Johanna is an old business coaching client of mine. We first crossed paths in 2023 when she approached me with the dream of starting her own podcast. Fast forward a couple of years, and Johanna’s podcast ADHD Her Way has become a beacon for many. As an ADHD Coach, psychologist and director of her coaching business, Johanna has turned her passion into a platform that supports women who’ve been masking and second-guessing themselves for far too long.

In episode 7 of the Mess Behind the Success podcast, Johanna’s sharing the real story behind building her podcast—the wins, the challenges, the messy bits that nobody talks about and how she keeps showing up even when the going gets tough.

Starting a Podcast: The Authentic Path

Johanna approached podcasting in the most earnest way possible: with a simple setup and a heart full of stories to share. A Yeti microphone, headphones and a desire to connect authentically—this was her starting point. She encourages anyone thinking about starting a podcast to embrace the basics and allow their voice to shine without getting bogged down by technical overcomplications.

Crafting Content with Heart

When embarking on a podcasting journey, Johanna highlights the importance of defining what you want to talk about and why. She crafted her podcast as a space for neurodivergent stories, sticking to a vision that’s both authentic and impactful. Her vibrant discussions with guests have not only enriched her podcast but also fostered genuine connections along the way.

The community she has built is a testament to the power of shared experiences. For Johanna, podcasting is about more than just putting out content; it’s about creating a dialogue and building meaningful relationships.

Keeping it Real: Embrace the Fun and Flaws

Johanna’s biggest lesson is one I absolutely love and resonate with—embracing imperfections and keeping the process enjoyable. In the early days, she was driven by deadlines and perfection, but she soon realised the real magic happens when you allow a bit of flexibility and fun. It’s not about perfection; it’s about the incredible, messy journey.

Beyond Podcasting: A Broader Canvas

Johanna’s journey hasn’t stopped at podcasting. She’s crafted programs for women with ADHD, focusing on community and connection. Whether it’s through group programs or individual coaching, Johanna channels her passion into creating supportive environments for neurodivergent women. Her podcast and coaching business are beautifully intertwined, each enriching the other.

To those considering starting their own podcast, take a leaf from Johanna’s book: start simple, stay true to yourself and let your passion guide the way. Authenticity is your greatest asset, and it’s what will make your podcast a joy, both for you and for your audience.
